Such a Relief!

2012Article posted by Gilly

The summer break has been wonderful with a great family Xmas, a quiet start to the New Year and enjoying the Australia Day Skyshow from the balcony of my parents’ apartment in the City - although Nature’s skyshow at the same time was almost more spectacular! But it wasn’t all rest and relaxation, although I did do a lot of that, particularly this last couple of weeks with the temperature soaring into those 40 degrees centigrade days. However, it was good to finish the final two commissions out of the eleven I started at the beginning of 2011.

You Have to Laugh!

2011Article posted by Gilly

This entry is really just an excuse to wish all my loyal ‘readers’ a Very Merry Xmas and wonderful New Year. Lots of painting, lots of creative thoughts, and lots of joy from the amazing art that we all produce be we beginners or seasoned artists. Lost Mojo

2011Article posted by Gilly

Around the beginning of this month my mojo went walkabout! Not lack of inspiration, I still have plenty of that. A head full of ideas and hundreds of reference photos to draw from that’s going to keep me going well into my dotage. But the motivation to get out into the Studio and actually do something, that just disappeared.  I felt completely stale, art-wise, and I think it’s all the commissions suddenly getting on top of me. My art went from being a fun and creative thing that I loved to do, to being a job! I don’t need a job. I paint because of a deep down compulsion to create the beautiful things that I see into, hopefully, beautiful paintings; to continually strive to be better; to make each artwork that I produce more skilful and more realistic than the previous one.

An Interesting Month

2011Article posted by Gilly

In connection with my doing an artist-in-residence session at La Salle College Exhibition, I was to be featured in a small article for one of the local community newspapers. So when the photographer arrived I expected a quick photo shoot and that would be it. However, he totally flabbergasted me by announcing that he wanted to do a video interview with me! Talk about being thrown in at the deep end! So, without any preparation or thought I was filmed in my little Studio and ‘though there are a few ‘urms’ and slight embarrassment, it didn’t turn out too badly. I think my years of amateur dramatics came to the fore! So, if you’re interested, go to this YouTube site and you can view me ‘in action’ so to speak! http://youtu.be/q3sGgSQ_czE

The Challenge of Commissions

2011Article posted by Gilly

As I’ve mentioned previously, this year I’ve taken on several commissions, so I thought it might be of interest to talk about the process of painting commissions as it is very different from just sitting at the easel and working on something purely for one’s own pleasure. To begin with, there is quite a bit of stress (for me, anyway) of trying to produce something to someone else’s specifications and for someone else’s vision, not to mention that the final painting must really please them.
