May Day Fete

2010Article posted by Gilly

Valley Learning Centre are holding a May Day Fete on 1st May 2010 at Baskerville Hall, Memorial Drive, Baskerville., 10.30 am - 3.30 pm.

This fete will be just a week before Mother’s Day and ideal for finding that one in a million, quirky gift for Mum.
We’re holding the fete indoors in case of inclement weather, although there will be a bouncy castle so, hopefully, it won’t rain.
There will also be various stalls - books, cakes, gardening, homemade lemonade and balloons, face-painting, jewellery, craft, white elephant, toys, ice creams, and Devonshire teas in the little cafe. There will also be a colouring-in competition for the kids with prizes for various age-groups, (the colour-in page should soon be available on our website). Our Valley Learning Recipe Book should also be on sale with some fantastic recipes included. Some are mine and are wonderful!

Julie’s Demo/Workshop

Last Monday Julie Silvester came out to the VLC art group and gave us a fabulous morning of fun and painting as she demonstrated how to compose a beach scene in pastels, showing the beautiful colours she uses for shadows, and her techniques for painting glorious, realistic waves. We all painted along and there were some very creditable results at the end of the session. I was particularly pleased with mine as her methods are very different from my own and I felt pushed right out of my comfort zone, which was great. I’ll probably even continue the work at home and produce a finished painting. Julie is such a gorgeous person and her work is just amazing. She does have a website, which I can’t remember right now, but just Google Julie Silvester, Perth artist and you’ll find her. She also has a gallery page (as do I!) on the Pastel Society of WA website, which is another good one to take a look at as there are lots of pastel society members on there as well.

I try to organise a demonstration by a professional artist every term. You should come along and join us on Monday mornings. We’re a great group and love welcoming new members. VLC’s website is currently being revised, but should be on-line again soon with the programmes for 2010. It’s not just art, but scrap-booking, jewellery making, mosaics, keep fit and more, and there’s a creche at certain times.
